“Grotesquerie” is a drama/horror series about a chain of gruesome crimes happening in a small community.
Grotesquerie wasn’t one of the shows I highly anticipated, but I don’t regret tuning in. While watching the show, I found myself very intrigued by the mystery of the crime,s but also disturbed by how cruel some of the scenes were. There were also parts I had to skip because they honestly made me uncomfortable.
However, the acting in the show is amazing. Nicholas Alexander Chavez plays a character named Father Charlie and he does a great job at being that character. He plays the role so well it almost makes you question him as a person.
The protagonist, a middle-aged detective named Lois (Niecy Nash), faces a weird, paranormal murder-mystery case. She is also battling family issues with a daughter and husband in need of medical help. Nash does a great job portraying the character in a realistic way that connects with the African-American experience.
“Grotesquerie” is not perfect. Certain episodes feel like they move away from the main plot. For example, professional football player Travis Kelce is in the show as a love interest, so it’s distracting to watch him try to act. There was also a combination of humor and horror that didn’t feel balanced. The whole show felt uneven because there was a lot to focus on. The viewer has to pay close attention to what is going on, and it would be best if you binged it all in order to keep up with the plot.
This show really embraces gore and focuses on the supernatural, even showing Satanism. Viewers have to be prepared for chaos and the unexpected. If viewers enjoy this show they would also enjoy some of the director’s (Ryan Murphy) other works like American Horror Story or Monsters.
