On Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014 the Ritenour varsity softball team defeated Hazelwood West to win their district championship at Fox Senior High School.

This was the first time the team had won the championship in over 30 years, which caused different emotions amongst team members.

The team had to play two games on Wednesday because rain had postponed the tournament, and they defeated Hazelwood Central in an 8:00 a.m. match-up.  Though they played two games spread out over the course of the day, pitcher and third basemen, junior Jordyne Frost believed that the team’s hitting won them the final game.

In the final game, senior first baseman Alyssa Noble drove in the tying run, right before junior second baseman Sarah Goers singled in the winning run.

“I felt the pressure of the game, but at the same time I knew my team was backing me up,” Noble said.

Due to the length of time since the last Districts win, players feel as though Ritenour students do not appreciate the talent level of the softball team. However, Goers hopes that this win will help increase the team’s status on campus.

After the final out was recorded, the team showed their emotions.

“[When we won] so many people started crying.  (senior catcher) Kiersten (Billington) was the first to start crying.  The seniors were very emotional; everybody was just so happy and hugging,” Noble said.
