During the 2023-2024 school year Nadyah Majeed-Ali worked diligently in completing her rigorous courses at St. Louis Community College (STLCC)-Florissant Valley.
She obtained the title of being the youngest STLCC Honors Scholar and was presented with a certificate, honors cord, and medal for completing these accelerated courses more promptly than any other student in their history.
“I wanted to participate in the dual enrollment program, not only for the opportunity to earn an associate’s degree but also for the opportunity to experience being a college student,” senior Majeed-Ali said.
STLCC provides various opportunities for high school students in the community to earn college credit and even an associate’s degree, on a budget, all while staying on track for their high school diploma. It also allows students to have a taste of college while still maintaining their life as a high school student.
“By participating in the Dual-Enrollment program, you have the opportunity to potentially simultaneously earn your high school diploma and associate’s degree, which saves money in your college journey,” said Majeed-Ali
Majeed-Ali completed the following courses at STLCC: Spanish, sociology, four advanced chemistry research projects, and precalculus algebra, all while juggling her extracurricular activities through Ritenour and within the community. Majeed-Ali played for both the tennis team and soccer team, dedicated to making time for her education and teammates as an athlete.
“I did have challenges of getting into the flow of how the college material was taught at first, and balancing my participation in sports and clubs,” Majeed-Ali said. “However, I quickly got into a rhythm of how to maintain organization and time management.
Senior Tatiana Floyd got to experience Majeed-Ali’s work ethic as her tennis teammate. The two have been teammates since their freshman year, and Majeed-Ali would share with Floyd about her experiences doing dual enrollment.
“She informed me as to when her classes are, how her professors act, and how the workload is in college. Nadyah is top of her classes and was also a team captain for our tennis team,” Floyd said. “When it comes to games there have been times when Nadyah comes and supports her teammates and then leaves to go home to do homework. She is very dedicated and considerate of others, even if it means spending time away from busy homework to show support to her teammates.”
Majeed-Ali was encouraged to join the program by college and career counselor Cabrina Noonan and believes that it can be a very important program for others in Ritenour to take advantage of.
“My advice to Ritenour students is to take time to get to know yourself and your worth, goals, and ambitions. Saint Louis Community College is extremely beneficial in providing students a safe and exciting environment of challenging course curriculum,” Majeed-Ali said.
