Sophomore Lailah Betton has been dancing for an all-girl dance company called The Diva University for 10 years and counting.
“My mom got me into dancing when I was young, and I just kept doing it,” Betton says. “[Dance] is a really good way to express yourself and show your creativity.”
Betton describes struggles with the many personalities on the team. According to Betton, it is hard to balance all the girls’ personalities, but their team works hard to build a strong family bond.
“Being on a dance team with a lot of girls is hard with a lot of different personalities and trying to get to know each other,” Betton said. “So when we go out of town, we try to do team bonding stuff so we all can become one family.”
Her dancing skills have caught the eyes of her friends as she has performed at some bigger events.
“She’s been dancing since she was little, like maybe a toddler, and she dances in front of a lot of crowds, even out of town,” sophomore Alison Killion said.
Sophomore Jordin Glover also noted that her social media presence is big.
“She’s a very skilled dancer,” Glover said. “She posts about her events, and she genuinely puts her all into that.”
Betton plans to continue dancing in college. Betton details Texas Southern University, a school where she wants to dance. She talks about Texas Southern and her familiarity with the university.
“I want to dance in college. My whole dance team’s theme is about preparing to dance in college for HBCU dance line, and that’s what I want to do,” Betton said. “My coach went there, so I know a lot about it. I have looked into them and their dance team, and I would want to dance for them.”
Although Betton doesn’t want to dance for her career, she still wants to pursue a creative career where she can continue to show her imagination and creativity.
“I don’t want to dance after college, it is more of a backup for me. I want to do fashion design or interior design, maybe,” Betton said. “ Dance is really creative and gives you a really big imagination, and I plan to take that from dance and use it for my future.”
